On May 9, 2024, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its Music Director José Luis Gomez, gave the premiere of Peter Boyer’s new work Horizons. Boyer’s work began a special program which featured superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma, performing the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Camille Saint-Saëns. Boyer’s new work received an extensive ovation from the sold-out audience at Tucson’s Linda Ronstadt Music Hall. Prior to the premiere performance, Boyer appeared alongside Yo-Yo Ma and José Luis Gomez to address a group of young composers, and the composer shared his new score privately with Mr. Ma.

Horizons was a co-commission from the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, and Brevard Symphony Orchestra, honoring Patricia “Pat” Joslyn on the occasion of her retirement, by the three orchestras at which she worked over her career. All three orchestras will be performing the work as part of the co-commission. More information about the project can be found on the Tucson Symphony’s website.
